2026 Scholarship Application submission window is now closed.

The American Legion Harford Post 39 awards a one-time, non-renewable scholarship to a qualified applicant who is a graduating senior from Bel Air High School, C. Milton Wright High School, Fallston High School, Harford Technical High School, John Carroll School, and Patterson Mill High School.

Also eligible is any student who is a child or grandchild of a current member of the American Legion Post 39, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 39, Auxiliary Unit 39, or a current active-duty service member (includes active-duty Reserve/National Guard), regardless of location of residence or location of school.

Applicants will be graded on the following merits:

  • Academic Excellence -Measures GPA, test scores, and difficulty of courses
  • Leadership & Extracurriculars – Assesses leadership, extracurricular participation, and initiative
  • Personal Essay – Evaluates the applicant’s communication skills and personal narrative
  • Special Talents or Achievements – Recognizes talent in arts, STEM, sports, or entrepreneurship
  • Letters of Recommendation – Weighs the strength of teacher/mentor endorsements
  • Future Goals and Impact – Evaluates aspirations and potential contributions to field or society

Applications for the 2027 Scholarship will be released on March 1, 2027.

Application Procedure for 2027

  1. Obtain an application from your school counselor or email scholarships@alpost39.org for one.
  2. Complete the application.
  3. Attach a copy of your high school transcript including current senior grades, class rank, GPA, and SAT or ACT scores to the application.
  4. Provide information about your school and community support extracurricular activities.
  5. Give information about your background, school achievements, post-secondary goals, career goals, and if you have received a scholarship from any other source in your essay.
  6. List the colleges/universities that you have been accepted to and provide acceptance letters.
  7. Mail or drop off the application to the post at the below address to the attention of the Scholarship Committee no later than April 30, 2027. Mailed packets must be postmarked no later than April 30, 2027 in order to be eligible.

Submitted material will not be returned. Please ensure you do not provide anything which you do not have a copy of for your records.
